Gum Disease

 

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, starts with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, leading to tooth loss and other serious health problems.

 

To prevent gum diseases, maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily to prevent plaque buildup. Regular dental visits are also needed for early detection and treatment of gum disease. Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support gum health. Lastly, smoking and using other tobacco products increase the risk of gum disease.

 

Tooth Sensitivity

 

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel wears down, exposing the dentin and making teeth sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.

 

To prevent tooth sensitivity, brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid enamel wear. Also, use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to help reduce sensitivity. Limit the consumption of acidic foods and beverages that can erode enamel. Lastly, consult with a dentist about fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity.

 

Bad Breath

To prevent oral cancer, regular dental check-ups should include screenings for that. Limit the use of tobacco products and alcohol, which are significant risk factors for oral cancer. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which contain antioxidants that may reduce the risk of oral cancer. Use lip balm with SPF to protect lips from harmful UV rays.

 

Tooth Grinding

 

Tooth grinding, or bruxism, often occurs during sleep – and Dr. Andrew Kelly states that it can lead to tooth damage, jaw pain, and headaches.

 

To prevent bruxism, wear a custom-fitted night guard to protect teeth while sleeping. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or exercise. Lastly, regular dental visits can help identify signs of bruxism early and prevent further damage.
