Errors in the diet of beginners are a huge reason why those who try to lose weight fail miserably in their attempts. Unless you already have a good working knowledge of nutrition and fitness, it is imperative that you start working on it as you will also become one of the 95% of dieters who fail either. Losing weight in a healthy way is not rocket science, but it does require the application of a little practical knowledge. People fail because they often don’t know what they don’t know. You can’t just decide one day to “watch” what they eat and also go on a new exercise regime, such as gangbusters. It just doesn’t work that way, no matter what some fitness influencers would have you believe.

Is obesity really that bad?

You bet that being obese on the lowest dollar is bad for your body, and I’m not talking about how you look. You can still be a beautiful person and be obese. The work we do at David’s Way is solely about your health and NOT how you look. But I digress…

The fat in your body is no different than the fat you’ve ever seen in a piece of meat or chicken. few descriptions. You may feel comfortable with it now, but it will cause you health problems in the future. Therefore, it is your duty to begin this problem now, and not in the future. You may not have a future, here’s why.

Diet Error #1

you make excuses

You may think these following excuses are legit and not subterfuge, but that belief is not rooted in science.

You think your weight problem is your thyroid or your glands giving you a hormonal imbalance. The truth is that these problems can lead to obesity, but only about 3% of people actually suffer from these problems that can be controlled. If you think you have a hormonal problem, you should see an endocrinologist. Ladies, you can’t blame obesity on your period. Sure, you’ll gain weight before you start your menstrual cycle, but it’s only the water weight that comes back as quickly as it came on. Obesity is a result of eating too many calories, not your bodily functions. In the not-so-distant past, most women were skinny all year round, even during their periods. Being an endomorph runs in my family, so it’s only natural that I’m fat. Yes, being endomorph is hereditary and you will have a fuller body. However, this can still be controlled and is not the reason why you are overweight. The reason you are overweight is that you eat too much. My metabolism changed after my baby was born. Everyone wants to blame a slow metabolism, but that’s an excuse. If you rightly have a slower metabolism, your weight can still be controlled with the right diet and by not overeating. The truth is that your metabolism is a function of your thyroid and you are unlikely to actually have a thyroid problem. If you think you may have a thyroid problem, see an endocrinologist. The birth of a baby does bring about a change in lifestyle, so you have to adjust your schedule. I’m older now and it’s not important to me to have a bikini body. You may no longer care about wearing a bikini, but no matter how old you are, you still need to take care of a healthy body. Just because you may be older isn’t an excuse for not having a healthy body at a healthy weight. I have too many social and/or business functions where I eat out. You can still have a social life without getting fat. You should make a conscious effort to choose the healthiest menu options and not overeat. You can always get a to go bag. Healthy food is too expensive. No, what is too expensive is doctor’s visits for diseases that could have been prevented if only you had eaten better and exercised.

Diet Error #2

You cannot take shortcuts.

You think you can take shortcuts to lose weight. A diet mistake made by many is that they want to lose weight quickly, which is why they go on fad diets in hopes of losing weight. However, fad diets often encourage deprivation and the demonization of food, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies and disrupted eating habits. They focus on quick results – and almost always on weight loss. The problem is that instead of losing weight, you need to focus on losing body fat without losing lean muscle mass. Fad diets are money makers, so companies make promises to bring in the big bucks. People are often tempted to buy the latest “weight-loss” product or book in order to spend even more money to try the next fad.

Instead of making the diet mistake of wasting your money on supplements, books, and products that don’t work, invest in your health by making small, lasting changes.

Diet Mistake #3

You join unscrupulous corporate weight loss groups that put your money before your health.

For many, our obesity problem is a source of money. And to get that money, some companies are willing to stretch the truth about what their products and services will do.

Here’s something to think about — some of the biggest players in the weight loss industry have accused each other of cheating. In 2010, Weight Watchers (the largest provider of weight-loss services in the US, with a market share of over 43%) sued Jenny Craig in New York City Court over her ads stating that “Jenny Craig’s customers lost, on average, more than twice as much weight as that of the largest weight loss program.” Weight Watchers claimed that no major clinical trial had been done to prove this statement and that those claims were false and misleading. The two companies came to a settlement: Jenny Craig, while admitting no mistakes, agreed never to publish, broadcast, or distribute the ad in any form again. In a statement released at the time, Jenny Craig said, “We challenge Weight Watchers to compete directly with us in a direct clinical trial.” None of these business entities really seem to have your best interest in mind. What they do have in mind is your money. Most of these companies operate in the same way as others who do the same. They rely on your diet mistakes to keep them going.

Diet Error #4

You don’t understand nutrition and it’s important to you.

It was an eye opener to see how many people we’ve helped here at David’s Way, who have little to no knowledge about proper nutrition. To win a battle, you have to attack it with planning. You need to know exactly what you are going to do before you start, otherwise you are doomed to fail. You can’t just say I’m going to lose weight and expect success if you don’t know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. For this reason, Brenda Sue and I have spent thousands of hours researching to bring you the most knowledge you’ll ever need for healthy weight loss – and we’re doing it for free for everyone!

Too many of our eating habits start during early childhood. We grow up liking or disliking the same foods that our family and friends like or dislike. Too many children today grow up not knowing how to eat nutritious food and also become obese.

We learn to eat by watching our parents. If mom eats chocolates in bed from morning to night, you will grow up thinking that this unhealthy eating habit is actually normal. Therefore, it is likely that you picked up on your parents’ bad habits before forming your own. If your parents had unhealthy eating habits and were overweight, chances are you will be exactly like them. But it doesn’t have to be.

You might believe with all your heart that you inherited their fat, but you didn’t. What you inherited is their bad habits that led to your weight problem. Most people are not heavy because of their genetics, they are just heavy because of their habits derived from early childhood exposure.
